Francisco António Lagarto (Master)

Francisco António Lagarto is the most relevant reference in what concerns the traditional pottery in Viana do Alentejo.

Born in Viana in 1909, he took his degree in pottery in the pottery school of Viana do Alentejo, later becoming himself a teacher in the said school, after concluding the State Exam in Caldas da Rainha, in order to be able to teach.

His innate capacity and skills led him to travel to other places, having been a teacher in Caldas da Rainha, Coimbra and Oporto, more precisely at the Escola Superior de Belas-Artes (Superior School of Fine Arts) where he was always considered a personality of great prestige.

Together with Aníbal Alcino, he dedicated himself to the renew of the processes of ceramic production of the Médico de Sousa school/workshop in the 60s of the 20th century, continuing the new processes and changes already started by Júlio Resende in 1949-1951.

He was always a much loved and appreciated person by the people of Viana that, to this day, still remembers his words, his knowledge and great sense of humor.

A man of multiple facets, he died in 1977. Oral and written testimonies reveal that the whole village accompanied his funeral paying their last respects and homage to the master, thus stating the importance of his teachings, shared around the heat of a wood fire, of the gestures of hands over hands, shaping the clay and teaching the inhabitants the way to a modern new era.
