Manuel Cardim (Dr.)

He was son of Gaspar Clemente and his wife, Inês Cardim, of noble origin.

He was the brother of Dr Jorge Cardim Fróis, corregidor, ombudsman and associate judge in diferente instances of the regal administration; and of fathers Fernão Cardim, Lourenço Cardim and Diogo Fróis, priests of the brotherhood Companhia de Jesus.

He obtained the degree as Fine Arts graduate in 1558 and of Graduate and Master in 1559. He registered as a candidate to medical studies at the University of Coimbra in 1562.

Amongst the ombudsmen of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Viana there is a Dr. Manuel Cardim in 1582 and between 1584 and 1585. The name, the time when he lived and the fact of being identified as a doctor leads us to assume that it is the same person.

In 1586, a Marcos Fernandes, son of Master Lucas and born in Castelo Branco, obtained a Royal Charter allowing him to use the science of surgery, after being considered capable by Dr Manuel Cardim Fróis, the Kingdom’s Chief Surgeon.

Dr Manuel Cardim, chief surgeon, has a tombstone in the main church of Viana, which indicates that this is the place where both he and his wife, Lady Francisa, were put to rest.
