Conhecer a História

Located on the northern side of the castle’s walled enclosure, it has a shared façade with the high choir of Misericórdia’s church. Its access was once made through the wall, but the last project of restoration, conservation and valorisation of the castle determined the recovery of its primitive access (that existed until the 20^th century’s 1970s) through the landscaped space that was connected, by walkway, to the balcony span on the building’s south façade.
According to Espanca, it was inaugurated in 1700 in the upper space of the former Town Council, probably after it was transferred to the square (as from 1683). However, in Carvalho da Costa’s Corografia Portuguesa, published in 1708, it is not mentioned, perhaps due to the author's forgetfulness. In 1758 it is mentioned in the Memórias Paroquiais (Local Parish Records).
Inside it has a single nave, with a cloister vault cover decorated with mural painting, whose artist is unknown. It also has a small vestibule to the east. Outside it has a masonry bell tower with triangular akroteria.
Espanca believes that it might have served as a mortuary chapel as of 1840 until 1871, when the graveyard, situated right next to it, ceased doing burials due to the construction of the cemetery outside the village.
After disaffection of the cult, the Parish Council was installed in it.
For centuries it gave the name to the street that leaves from the North door of the castle in direction to Évora, which was called Street da Assunção - after being known as Street Direita, and before receiving the current toponym of Cândido do Reis.
