Hermitage of São Pedro

By its appearance it must have been built in the 16th century in a rural area nowadays known by the same name, and is inserted in a private property and in a state of very advanced ruin. Of some architectonic importance, its commissioner is not known, as well as the reasons for its construction.
It is integrated in the Gothic-Mudéjar style of the Alentejo region. It had a single nave with a groined vault. The main chapel would be more recent, of square plan and with cover in the form of dome, as well as the narthex.
Today it only has the side façades of the nave and the façades of the main chapel. However, although the building is irrecoverable, it is still visible, only in the main chapel, the existence of mural painting that will be contemporaneous with the rebuilding of the chevet apse. The pictorial composition would be dedicated to the Patron and would at least be in the façades. It can still be seen, on the southern wall, Cristo com São Pedro (Christ with Saint Peter). In the squinches appear the Evangelists, being identified São Marcos (Saint Mark), and in the dome would have been characters under clouds that might have been angel musicians, as is usual in other Catholic temples.
The observed stylistic elements, such as the characters, chromatic palette, ornaments and compositional organization, made Catarina Vilaça de Sousa integrate this fresco painting sample in the repertoire of the workshop of José de Escovar, a distinguished 16th century painter from Évora.
