Calvary’s Oratory

Construction of minimal dimensions, in cylindrical form, is located near the hermitage of São Sebastião (Saint Sebastian), on the roadside that goes from Viana to Alcáçovas. It is a small whitewashed oratory coated with protruding stones on the outer wall, which might evoke the stony path of the Calvary, traversed by Christ. The date and the reasons for its construction are not known, but it must be posterior to 1758, since it is not mentioned in the village’s Memórias Paroquiais (Local Parish Records) written that year, and may result from a particular promise.
It is reached by a stair of 6 steps that give access to a small and simple portal. Inside, the white marble capital, of Mudéjar style, reused from some construction of the Manueline era, serves to support a crucifix.
