António Isidoro de Sousa’s Bust

Placed in the middle of the República Square, it is a homage made by public subscription to António Isidoro de Sousa, veterinary doctor, born in Viana and active benefactor of the county, where he became mayor in 1898. It consists of a bronze bust, cast by O. Dias, whose model was a clay mould of Isidoro de Sousa’s face made at the time of his death by José Albino Dias, professor and painter of the Industrial School Médico Sousa, from Coimbra. The bust rests on a marble plinth designed by the architect of Viana Bernardino Luís Coelho, who was also responsible for the design of the Cineteatro Vianense.
António Isidoro de Sousa stood out at the time he lived for the literary culture he possessed, by comparison with the majority of the population, mostly illiterate, and by the action developed in favour of the locality in several areas, both economic and political, and also social support.
The monument was inaugurated on 28th April 1940 with the presence of his brother, Eng. José Fernando de Sousa, in an appropriation of his figure by the Estado Novo, during the phase of implantation of the agricultural corporatism.
