Fonte das Freiras (Fountain of the Nuns)

Also known as Fonte de Baixo (Low Fountain), because of its location lower than any of the other fountains in the village, it was built during the reign of the portuguese King D. João V, with the permission of the outside Judge Dr. João da Cunha Correia, at the request of the nuns of the Convento do Bom Jesus (Monastery of the Bom Jesus), which is close by.
The purpose was to facilitate the water supply for the congregation, the fountain being supplied by the water surpluses of Fonte Coberta, and the leftovers were used for the irrigation of the monastic fence and annexed gardens.
In September 1820, during a drought, the fountain was partially demolished with the Liberal Council’s support, given that its opening, primarily intended for the sisters’ usage, was never well accepted by the population. In 1896 - date marked on the top headstone - received someremodelling works, thanks to the council with the people’s participation, as attested the inscriptions A união faz a força (Union makes strength) and Querer é poder (Where there’s a will there’s a way). In the 20th century the surrounding urban space was fixed.
