The Parish Church of São Salvador, built over a primitive Gothic temple, founded in 1308 by the Bishop of Évora D. Fernando III, was built in 1530-1531 under the auspices of Cardinal Infante D. Afonso, Bishop of Évora.
The building, of Renaissance architecture, archetype of the Hall Church, of a hallenkirchen type, of rectangular plan, is divided in three naves and five sections based in strong Doric granitic columns. The three naves are preceded by a choir of three arcades protected by balustrade.
In the lateral naves are eight chapels, among them the primitive chapel of the gothic temple, besides the baptistery in the inferior zone of the high choir. In the central nave stands the open presbytery in a round arch, of quadrangular plan. This is preceded by a carved wooden tribune, bearing in the lower part the tabernacle that is from the end of the 17^th century.
The front of this building opens to a vast churchyard centered by the Calvary, where one deserves to enjoy the immensity of the plain or even glimpse its sober and, at the same time, sumptuous main elevation. Composed of three portals, which communicate with the inside, adorned with gray stucco ornaments, fake windows, shaped like a shell, lunettes, pediments, sculptural ornaments shaped like flames, and a central balcony. Of granite stone, similar to that which reinforces the Doric pillars of the same elevation, the two towers rise, finished by slender tips that are lost in the immense sky that receives them.
The Parish Church of São Salvador, classified as Property of Public Interest, is nowadays a treasure to be discovered and known by all those who visit the region and especially the village of Alcáçovas, which holds a vast Cultural Heritage.
