Abrir ListaThis hermitage existed already in 1537 but the date of its foundation as well as who ordered its construction are unknown.
In the 18th century it was used as the headquarters of the Venerável Ordem Terceira de São Francisco (Venerable Third Order of St. Francis), after it has left the Main Church.
From 1890 onwards, the building as used as a school for boys. After having been desecrated for centuries, it was reopened in 1970.
The restoration works it went through during the second half of the 18th century and then in 1969 changes the appearance of the building and caused the disappearance of its exterior ornaments. Its presence façade is very plain where the highlight is only a triangular gable wall.
The interior, however, is composed by four different spaces with some interesting artistic elements: eso-narthex, nave, main chapel and vestry.
The eso-narthex is of square plant, covered by an octagonal dome, decorated with mural paintings over the inlay and at the center: There is also a marble stone over the cut edge and in the center. The eso-narthex also has a marble basin.
The nave, of rectangular plant, is covered by a half-barrel vault and is decorated with sgraffitoes of “St. Andrew’s Cross” in square caissons.
Preceded by a triumphal arch, the main chapel is of square plant and its vault and walls are painted white with no ornaments. However, over the main arch there is an eyepiece surrounded by braids.
There is a marble basin in the vestry.
