Sociedade União Alcaçovense

The Sociedade União Alcaçovense was founded on January 20th, 1885. The father rector Joaquim Pedro de Alcântara was the founder associate and Member of Board of this community. The statuses of the Sociedade União Alcaçovense were approved by the franchise code of ethics number 54, on the 18th of July of that year, by the Civil Governor of Évora. They were later altered and approved on May 23rd, 1957.

The aim of this community was to offer its associates and their families entertaining opportunities as well as learning possibilities; the education of its associates by reading; to cooperate in the local charitable actions; the creation of a library of books chosen with extreme care to instruct its associates; organize excursions, festivals, music concerts, balls, shows and any other form of amusement both inside or outside its headquarters. According to its Statuses it had, initially, three types of associates: the performers, the contributors and the honorary.

On July 30th 1996, at the Notary’s Office in Montemor-oNovo, a new change of the statuses ocurred, introducing a change in types of associates: the effective, the members by merit, the benenfactors and the honorary.

In the same year of the creation of the Association, the Banda União Alcaçovense, was created in result of the joining of two previously existing bands: the first one, founded in 1850 by the Cabral family, popularly called “Os Nalgueiros”; and the “Pés Frescos”, that appeared in 1855. In 1983, the Sociedade União Alcaçovense organized its first Civil Bands Encounter. This initiative gathered about 10 bands and over 400 musicians. And already on the 13th January 2009, the band of the Sociedade União Alcaçovense was awarded the Medal of Honor of the Municipality.

Concurrently, and also in 1885, the Grupo Cénico da Sociedade Alcaçovense was giving its first steps. Between 1940 a 1960 there were several periodical exhibitions, followed by an interruption until the 70s. In July 1971, the group was reactivated, exhibiting the play “A Promessa” (The Promise) by Bernardo Santareno.

In 2007, the Sociedade União Alcaçovense finished the refurbishment and expansion works of the bar, office, rehearsal and classes room. With a diversity of activities, besides the band and the scenic group, from 2008 to 2011, this had ballroom dances, table ténis and sport shooting.
Presently, the band and the scenic group are the two main pillars of the Sociedade União Alcaçovense.
