Jorge Cardim Fróis (Dr.)

Jorge Cardim Fróis was the son of Gaspar Clemente and of his wife, Inês Cardim, of a noble background.

He was born in Viana and owned several properties in this village as well as in the village of Torrão. This is probably the reason why there is a Rua dos Cardins (Cardins’ street) in the center of the said village.

He was the brother of Father Fernão Cardim, Father Lourenço Cardim and Father Diogo Fróis, all of them priests of the brotherhood Companhia de Jesus; and of Dr. Manuel Cardim, main surgeon of the kingdom.

Jorge Cardim Fróis studied Civil Law and occupied several judiciary positions in regal instances.

There is a record of a Jorge Cardim, born in “Viana”, who studied in Coimbra University from 1556 to 1561, that may be the same person.
He married Catarina de Andrade, born in Campo Maior.

He was ombudsman of the district of Moncorvo in 1585; around the years 1588 or 1589, he changed to ombudsman of the district of Évora and, around 1593, he was appointed appeal court judge in Oporto. He was also an inspector judge at the district of Santarém and associate judge of the Casa da Suplicação, in unknown dates.

His grave is in the Chapel of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in the church of the Bom Jesus monastery, ornated in 1643, but he may have died a few years earlier. The inscription reads that he had 10 children, nine of them belonging to religious orders. One to the Ordem de Cristo (Order of Christ), 3 to the brotherhood of Companhia de Jesus, 3 nuns in Santa Clara monastery and 2 in a monastery in Viana. Father Fernão belonged to the Order of Christ. Fathers João Cardim, Diogo Cardim and António Francisco Cardim professed in the brotherhood Companhia de Jesus. Sister Isabel de São Francisco and Sister Francisca da Trindade professed at de Monastery of Bom Jesus in Viana, this latter one only a few minutes before passing away. Lady Inês de Andrade, Lady Serafina de Andrade e Lady Leonor Froe were nuns at the convent of Santa Clara in Portalegre.

Jorge Cardim Fróis was the father of Lady Maria Cardim de Andrade who married Diogo Marmeleiro de Noronha, a nobleman of the Royal House, in Coimbra, his hometown.
