He was member of the brotherhood Companhia de Jesus and he was amongst the martyrs of 1570 during the voyage to Brazil. On July 15th of that year, the recent elected provincial for Brazil of the brotherhood Companhia de Jesus, Father Inácio de Azevedo, thirty seven companions and a candidate to the brotherhood were martyred by a group of Dutch huguenots led by Jacques Soria, in front of the Island of La Palma, in the Canary Islands. On the following day, brother Simão Costa was also martyrized. These forty martyrs (thirty two Portuguese and eight Spanish) are generally known as the Martyrs of Brazil because they were killed when they were on their way to a Mission of the brotherhood Companhia de Jesus in Brazil.
The cult of theses martyrs spread rapidly, in several countries and achieved a high expression. Fifteen of those martyrs were novices in Évora and one of them was André Gonçalves, from Viana.
André Gonçalves is depicted in a regional limestone statuette, made in Vila Viçosa in the sixties of the 20th century. It was placed in an exterior niche on the south side of the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora de Aires. This image is part of a set of four, the other three being: Blessed Nuno de Santa Maria (Nuno Álvares Pereira), St. João de Deus and St. António.
