Joana da Gama

Joana da Gama was born around 1520 in Viana, daughter of Manuel Casco and of Filipa da Gama.

She founded, in Évora, the seclusion Salvador do Mundo (Savior of the World) that, later on and in a different location, became de convent of Salvador (Convent of the Savior).

She is a prominent figure because there is a literary work attributed to her that highlights her as an element of promotion of womanhood in Portugal, in those days. In spite of having published it under the cover of anonymity, she is the first woman known to have written an original in Portuguese language. Her book Ditos da Freyra. Ditos diuersos feytos por huma freyra da Terceyra Regra nos quaes se cõtem sentemças muy motaueys & auisos nacessarios, is believed to have been published in 1555. There is a second edition still from the 16th century but without the texts in verse.

She died on September 21, 1586.
